NEW ZEALAND WORKERS
PRAISE BY SIR C. LEYS (Received January' 23, 6.45 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 23 A tribute to Australian and New Zealand workers was paid by Sir Cecil Leys, of Auckland, who arrived by tho Narkunda to-day from a tour abroad. He said Australia and New Zealand equalled in production and manufacturing methods the many overseas countries he had visited, and the workmen, when they became used to a job, had no superiors in Europe; England or America. Sir Cecil Leys added that Japanese standards of living were improving. Manufacturing was done so cheaply that tariffs could not bridge tho difference between Japan and Western countries. Japanese manufacturers wore content to turn over their output for the smallest margin; howevor, as the Japanese became educated to better standards and realised tho propriety and necessity of a reasonable profit, and as tho general living standard tended more toward Western levels, much of Japan's competitive menace would disappear. i , ,
Sir Cecil will return to Auckland by tho Niagara, sailing on January 30.
