SITUATION IN DANZIG
"EXCEPTIONALLY GRAVE" STRONG CRITICISM OF NAZIS (Received January 23. 5.5 p.m.) GENEVA, Jan. 22 The League Council at Geneva to-day had before it the situation in the free city of Danzig, which the British Foreign Secretary, Mr. Eden, who has reported to the Council on the question, described as "exceptionally grave." Mr. Anthony Eden sternly criticised tho Nazi Government of Danzig at the League Council meeting. He declared that if there seemed to be stress and gravity in the situation it was because events since September raise tho question as to whether the Danzig Government was acting in goodwill and good faith. Mr. Sean Lester, the League's High Commissioner, described the situation in Danzig as acute, the result of the non-fulfilment of previous promises. Hcrr Greiser, president of the Danzig Senate, declared that it was not intended to repudiate the Constitution, "We tried out 75 per cent of the League's recommendations," he said. "Differences of interpretation existed in respect of the others, which are of minor importance. We are tho League's child and look to tho Leaguo to uphold peace and justice." Summing tip, Mr. Eden stated that he could not accept Herr Greiser's view that failure to fulfil certain undertakings was not important or that there were differences of interpretation. On the contrary, it was impossible to allow matters to continue. "We must try to reach a solution," he added.
Other members of the Council spoke strongly on tho violations of the Danzig Constitution which have occurred and which must, they declared, be brought to an end.
Mr. Eden will prepare proposals for submission to the Council at a subsequent meeting with the view to securing respect for the Constitution, which is guaranteed by the League.
