HARBOUR BRIDGE
ATTITUDE IN THE NORTH \ WHANGAREI COUNTY COUNCIL ] [from our own correspondent] i WHANGAREI, Friday < "I think we would be well advised s to keep out of this question," said the i chairman, Mr. J. A. S. Mackay, at to- i day's meeting of the Whangarei County i Council, when the Takapuna Borough Council wrote asking for the council's support in an effort to have the construction of the Auckland harbour bridge taken over by the Government as a national undertaking. Mr. Mackay said the construction o* the bridge might later mean the levying of a rate on the people of the North which was not desirable. "The people here do not cross the Auckland harbon*more than a few times a year, and th<* present ferry facilities are suflicient for our requirements." Mr. J. H. Havward said he could not agree with that view. He believed the bridge would eventually be constructed. The people living on the North Shore would be greatly benefited, especially business people, to whom the loss of time with the use of the vehicular ferry was a serious matter. If the work were undertaken by the Government with tho use of unemployment funds he thought, there would be no striking of any rate. Mr. A. Clarke said the bridge woulcl probably cost about £2,000,000, and he believed the unemployment funds could , be used to better advantage. The construction of concrete highways would be ; a better policy. : The letter was received. (
