H.M.S. CALLIOPE

Sir, —Auckland should be grateful to the Mayor, Mr. Ernest .Davis, for his enterprise in obtaining 0110 of the steering wheels of H.M.S. Calliope for tho Auckland War Memorial Museum. But is there not a special interest to Aucklanders in obtaining a link with this famous ship, apart from her survival of the Samoan hurricane in 1889? Was it not because H.M.S. Calliope was the first ship to ehter our largo dock across the harbour in 1888 (followed by H.M.S. Diamond) that to it was given tho name Calliope Dock? Kaui.
