ANNUAL CONFERENCE OPENING IN JANUARY ABOUT 300 DELEGATES The third annual conference of the Catholic Teachers' Association of New Zealand will be held in Auckland this year, and will open on the morning of Tuesday, January 7. It will be attended by all members of the hierarchy and by the largest and most representative body of Roman Catholic teachers that have yet met in New Zealand. The two previous conferences were held in Christchurch and in Dunedin. Bishop Listen will sing Pontifical High Mass in St. Patrick's Cathedral at 9 a.m. on the opening day of the conference, and will deliver the official address of welcome to the delegates. All morning sessions will be held in St. Benedict's Hall, and at the first session there the Mayor, Mr. Ernest Davis, will deliver an address of welcome. The three afternoon sessions will be held in succession in the Assembly Hall of the Auckland University College, in the hall of St. Mary's College, Ponsonby, and finally at the Sacred Heart Convent, Victoria Avenue, when the solemn Pontifical Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament will be given in the chapel at the close of business. Notable Visitors Expected Notable visitors to the conference will be Dr. J. Thompson, of Sydney, director of Catholic Education in New South Wales, and rector of Sr. John'? College in the University of Sydney; Archbishop O'Shea, of Wellington, Metropolitan; Bishop Brodie, of Christchurch; and Bishop Whyte, of Dunedin. Dr. Thompson, who will arrive by the Aorangi on January 6, will be the principal speaker at the conference, and at the first afternoon session, which will be open to the public, he will deliver an address on "The Catholic Student and the University." Bishop Liston will address the conference on "Catholic Action," a subject of which he has made a special study during his recent travels abroad. This address will be followed by a discussion. Other speakers from whom important contributions arc expected are tho Rev. Father McCarthy. S.J., of Xavier College. Melbourne; Father McKeefry, of Auckland, who will speak on "Catholic Church History in New Zealand"; and the Rev. J. J. Kennedy, S.M., of St. Patrick's, Silverstream. Mr. Ernest Jenner, of Christchurch, lecturer in music at the Canterbury Teachers' Training College, will direct the work of the conference on church music Secondary Schools' Syllabus All the teaching orders in the Dominion will be represented at the conference, and it is expected that about 300 delegates will take part. Sectional meetings will be held in the mornings, when teachers will be assembled in groups according to their respective duties in the schools and the ages of the pupils with whom thev have to deal. A discussion on the probable revision of the Roman Catholic secondary schools' syllabus will be a feature of the conference. Complete arrangements have been made for the transportation of the delegates from point to point about the city, and a fleet of motor-buses has been engaged for this purpose.
