SERVICE TO AUSTRALIA PROTESTS AT DISCONTINUANCE (Received November 8, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON. Nov. 8 The Paris correspondent of tlfe Times says that strong protests are being made at Marseilles against the Government's decision to suppress the Australia service of the Messageries Maritimes Line. At a meeting of maritime organisations which was attended by the Mayor of Marseilles, a resolution was carried asking the Government to reconsider its decision. Speakers emphasised that the saving, estimated at £130,000 a year, would bo more apparent than real, as laying-up charges, unemployment relief and the loss of special tonnage charges would account for nearly £IOO,OOO a year.
The Government" is also reminded that the suppression will mean the disappearance of an important commercial link between France and Australia, and is therefore a great blow to French commercial prestige in that" part of the world.
