RICCARTON TRIALS

THE FINAL GALLOPS VINTAGE AND KILTOWYN PAPER SLIPPER'S HALF-MILE [by TKLEGRArn—own corresponiiknt] CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday The final gallops to-day for the New Zealand Cup meeting were carried out in most unseasonable weather. Fortunately for the early morning workers, rain, which fell during the night, ceased when proceedings opened and fine conditions prevailed until shortly after the breakfast interval, when a heavy hailstorm stopped work for a period and mado the atmosphere very cold; The outside of the course proper was open and, although the going was reasonably good early it became holding when it was cut up. The times for the early gallops were in consequence much better than after breakfast, owing to the state of the surface -and to the absence of wind. Later in the morning the horses met a strong bend wind from, the half-mile post home. Therefore, from a comparative standpoint the morning's operations did not carry the value usually attached to the final workouts. Paper Slipper and Wild Chase ran a smart four furlongs in 48 3-ss, which was not approached during the morning. The pair were together a furlong from home, but Paper Slipper then gradually drew away and was over two lengths in front at the finish. Hororata, assisted in the concluding stages by Sky Pilot, covered seven furlongs in 1.35 l-ss, the latter finishing in front. Fracas Goes Well Fracas impressed by galloping a mile in 1.46. Bun Fight followed over the same ground in 1.46 2-5. Astraea and Rival Shot ran half a mile in 51 4-ss. and Tail Light easily beat Slasher over seven furlongs in 1.37. Cuddle (L. J. Ellis); Sunee and Walton Park were associated over a mile and a-quarter. They went off slowly and completed the last mile in 1.50 1-5. Cuddle and Sunee were almost abreast turning for home, with Walton Park tailed off, but the last-named ran on well and finished a neck in front of Cuddle, with Sunee about five lengths away. This was a good gallop on the part of Cuddle, who was always going well within herself. Walton Park was struggling in the rear until he made his run at the end and showed that he could stay on solidly. Sunee went well for a mile only. Dawning Light reeled off half a mile in 51 4-ss. This is an improving filly, who is expected to raco well at the meeting. Tooley Street and Hunting Bag galloped seven furlongs in 1.34 2-5. Girl Guido and Glowlight covered a mile in 1.51.
