INSTITUTE AFFAIRS

Fairfield.- —Mrs. Fow presided over a good« attendance of members and friends. Several new members were welcomed. Madame Burtyl demonstrated the cutting of paper patterns. The roll call, "A Humorous Story," caused much amusement. The competition for the best plate of pikelets was won by Mrs. McKirmon, and that for a knitted garment by Miss Langly. Ihc institute rug was won by Mrs. Langsland, find the hostesses' competition by Mrs. Graney. Horotiu. —In the absence of the president, Mrs. Toulson presided over a large attendance. Members from Te Kowhai were welcomed. Mrs. Cox, of that institute, gave a lecture on gardening and judged the competition, for the best vase of flowers, which was won by Miss Lawson. Mrs. Harris gave vocal items. Waikato East Federation.—The biennial conference of the Waikfito East (formerly Matamata district) Federation was held in the Town Hall, Matamata. Mrs. Gordon presided and associated with her on the platform were Miss Amy Kane, of Wellington, a member of the Dominion executive, and Mrs. Harris, secretary of the federation. The treasurer's and organiser's reports were read and adopted. Several resolutions were carried, and following these Miss Thompson gave a skipping dance. . Miss Kane gave a talk on her recent trip abroad. When in England she attended annual general meeting of w6men's institutes of Great Britain, held in the Albert Hall, London. There were 8000 women there, she said, and it was a most inspiring sight. Good business was done at a "bring-and-buy" stall in aid of federation funds. Te Puke. —A well-attended meeting of the institute group was hold recently- Mrs. R. McNaughton, who presided", suggested that any member who had spare books should forward the same to the group secretary for distribution. It was decided that the institute competition exhibition of flowers at the horticultural show should be displayed in 12 jars of uniform size. The question of providing a clubroom was discussed, and a sub-committee was appointed to deal with the matter. Mrs. McNaughton spoke with reference to tlie appointment of a women's representative committee, and it was decided to write to kindred organisations and ascertain their views on the proposal. Mrs. Crowley was appointed chairman for the next 12 months. Mrs. Chappcll gave an address on • children's health camps, and appealed for contributions. Miss W. Stewart spoke of the marketing of eggs and their food value.
