TROPICAL STORM
LOWER FLORIDA SWEPT CASUALTIES AND DAMAGE ■ BEACH RESORTS SUFFER By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received November 5, 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK. Nov. 4 A message from Miami, Florida, states that a tropical hurricane during which the wind reached a velocity of more than 100 miles an hour swept from the Bahamas in a south-westerly direction across the Lower Florida peninsula to-day. There were numbers of casualties and much damage was done to property in Miami. Possibly the damage is worse in Florida Keys, with which area communications are cut. The full force of the hurricane hit Miami Bench and Palm Beach this afternoon. It is reported that eight people were killed in Miami, most of whom were crushed by crumbling buildings and homes. Several coastal vessels were forced to seek shelter. One craft, not yet identified, fired distress signals a roile off the exclusive resort section of Miami Beach. The hurricane churned the Gulf of Mexico, off the south-western coast of Florida, leaving four people dead and 100 injured in the southern part of the State. Two coastguard cutters are struggling through a rough sea in an effort to reftch the vessel which called for assistance.
