AUCKLAND FRENCH CLUB
END OF SUCCESSFUL. .YEAR The annual meeting of the Auckland French Club was held on Monday evening in the rooms of the Penwomen's League, Mr. G. S. Coldham presiding over a large attendance. The report showed that the season had been most successful. Special reference was made to the excellent programmes presented throughout the year. Marked success had been achieved by the French conversation class, conducted in connection with the club. In this section, as well as in the club itself, membership had increased. The balancesheet showed a satisfactory financial position. The election of officers resulted as follows:—-President of honour, M. Joubert, Consul for France; president, Mr. G. S. Coldham; vice-presidents, Messrs. P. S. Ardern and H. A. .Francis, and Madame M. F. Foley; secretary, Mr. S. M. Y. Hamlin; treasurer, Miss M. Stein; librarian, Mile. H. Le Houx; assistant-librarian, Miss N. Snowden; committee, Messrs. W. L. Barr, P. Egan, O. Gillespie and A. Thomson, Mesdames P. Hall, M. Cabauret and W. Caldcrwood, and Miss E. Hall; auditor, Mr. M. J. Herman. Prizes donated by the French Consul for the leading mombor of the club's conversation class and of the Mount Albert Grammar School French Club were presented by the president to Miss L. R. Todd and S. W. Campbell, respectively. The results of the recent secondary schools' competition in French reading, dictation and conversation wore announced as follows: — First and second prizes (presented by the French Alliance of Paris), Juno Barter (Epsom Girls' Grammar School), fend Arthur I. McCutclian (Otahuhu Technical High School); certificate, Marv Davidson (Auckland Girls' Grammar" School), Arthur W. S. Stuckcy (Mount Albert Grammar School}, and .loan Mascull (Epsom Girls' Grammar School). Following the annual meeting an enjoyable programme, arranged by Madame M. F. Foley, was presented. This included French songs by Mrs. Vita Cornwell and Mr. W. M. A. Garratte, pianoforte solos by Mrs. 11. A. Ueed, a French reading by Mr. G. S. Coldham, musical monologues by Miss Dorothy Dreaver, and violin and pianoforte trios by Mrs. Vita Cornwell, Miss P. Sexton and Mr. Sexton. A successful season was brought to a close with the presentation of a humorous French play, " Dead.Heat," produced by members of the conversation class. Parts were taken by Mrs. C. R. Bach and the Misses L. R. Tocld, B. Carr, M. Stein and J. Eobertson.
