MIRACULOUS ESCAPES
FLIERS' combat fire CRASH IN DEEP GORGE (Received November 5, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, Nov. 5 When an aeroplane they were flying over the Blue Mountains caught fire in mid air, Messrs Rex Nicholl, aged 26, a Tasman flier, and Albert Needham, aged 29, had miraculous escapes from death. They managed to bring the machine down at the bottom of a deep gorge, and escaped with slight facial injuries. The aeroplane was wrecked. The men took a compass from the aeroplane and walked all yesterday through the bush, eventually reaching Newne's Junction, near Lithgow.
Mr. E. It. Nicholl, of Manly, Sydney, and a young New Zealand pilot, Mr. R. G. Whitehead, of Wellington, flew the Tasman on November 22 last year. They made the flight in an old Puss Moth aeroplane. For a time it was feared they had been lost, as they were not heard of for 24 hours after leaving Gerringong Beach, New South Wales, when they landed unexpectedly at Mangere aerodrome, Auckland. They had made a landfall in North Auckland, and landed at East Beach, south of Houhora Heads, where they spent the night. The fliers later toured New Zealand.
