STREET COLLISION

TRAMCAR AND LORRY MOTORMAN'S lucky escape ' COMPARTMENT WRECKED The front of a tramcar was •wrecked and the motorman had a remarkable escape from injury in a collision with a motor-truck laden with bales of wool at the corner of Remuera Road and Middleton Road, near Newmarket, early yesterday afternoon. The motorrr.an's compartment of the tramcar was smashed so muchythat only the super-structure remained intact. The front windows and those on one side were carried completely away, together with all the supports, while the controls were also wrecked, parts of them being strewn about the roadway. The motorman was Mr. Robert Middlemiss, of 21 Oban Road, Grey Lynn, who escaped with bruises and scratches on one leg. , . The truck, owned by J. J. Craig, Limited, was being driven out of Middleton Road by Mr L. G. Burton, of 10 Haslett Street, Eden Terrace, in the direction of Newmarket, the collision occurring when it was crossing the tramrails on the opposite side of Remuera Road. An inward-bound tramcar struck the back of the truck, the force of the impact being taken by one of the bales of wool. One bale was thrown off, but the truck suffered no damage. The sudden application of the brakes startled passengers in the tramcar, which was brought to an abrupt stop. The tram was able to proceed to the Epsom depot under its own power, being worked from the rear controls. Parts of th«j.front of the tram had been reduced to matchwood and the roadway was covered with broken glass and splinters. There was little delay to traffic, the tram soon being removed and the road cleared.
