NEW ZEALAND CUP
TEST OF STAMINA BREEDING OF CANDIDATES MANY SIRES REPRESENTED BY SPEARMINT The field of 17 .acceptors for the New Zealand Cup contains horses by 15 different sires. There is only a single sire represented by more thau one acceptor, this being Silverado with three, Argentic, Silver Sight and Tuirau. Six of the 15 have already sired winners over a distance of two miles. These are Kilbroney, Chief Ruler, Psychology, Sutala, Australian Sun and Limond. Silverado and Verbius are sires of winners of weight-for-ago races over a mile and three-quajtcrs. The others have yet to prove themselves over a distance.
Iho topweight Vintage has only had one start over two miles. This was in tho last Auckland Cup, where he met with interference. Ho is by Shambles from Quality, by Clarenceux from Lady Majestic, by Majestic, a son of Trenton, and sire of the Australian and Sydney Cup winner Realm. Further back in his pedigree appear the names of Bill of Portland, MartiniHenry (Melbourne Cup) and Yattendon.
Shambles is by Phalaris from Fluff, by the Ascot Gold Cup winner Eider, from Trenton Queen, by Trenton. Clarenceux was by tho Goodwood Cup winner King's Messenger from Squint 11., by Hagioscope. He was a great stayer and his pedigree is full of staying blood. Vintage has three strains of Musket, and, if fit, should stay tho distance. The Tracery Line Cuddle is by Psychology from Caress, by Martian from the imported mare Trichas, by Thrush. Psychology has sired many good middle-distance performers, and his son Alienist won the Perth Cup, two miles. He is a son of Tracery, sire of Pantheon, sire of Peter Pan, and of Archery, siro of tho Sydney Cup winner Akuna. ! Tracery was also sire of Obliterate, sire of Quashed, who last week won the Jockey Club Cup, two miles and i a-quarter. Martian was one of tho greatest sires of stayers and of dains of stayers ever seen in New Zealand. Thrush was siro of Jackdaw, siro of Brown Jack, who won the Alexandra Stakes, two miles and three-quarters, six years in succession. There is any amount of stamina in this breeding. Kilbronoy, sire of Kiltowyn, has tho best staying record of any sire represented.* He won tho Great Metropolitan Stakes, two mites and a-quarter, and tho Goodwood Cup, 2 miles 5 fur., and sired The Banker (New Zealand Gup), Oratrix (New Zealand Cup), Concentrate (Auckland Cup) and Kilboy (Trentham Gold Cup). Tho dam of Kiltowyn is Towyn, by Lucullus from Congress, by Hierarch from Te Huinga, by Hotchkiss from Sunningdale, by Hampton. This sido of the pedigree represents speed rather than stamina, although Lucullus was stoutly bred and sired many middle-distanco performers. Ho is siro of the dams of Nightly, Limarch and King March. Steeton's principal recommendation is her runaway win last year. She is by Sutala from Roden, by Danube from Remission 11., by Black Sand. Sutala was by Elysian from Lady Hester* a sister to Waiuku, and Danube was the best of his yoar. Black Sand won the Cesarewitch, two miles and a-quarter. Brother to St. Leger Winner Argentic is by Silverado from Spotlight, by Nassau from Stardancer, by Martian. This is tho famous family that produced Menschikoff, Wnrstep (New Zealand Cup) and Starland. (Auckland Cup). Tho dam-s side is full of stamina, and whether Argentic will see out the distance may depend on his sire, Silverado. The latter is! by Polymeius from Silver Tag, by Sundridgo, but his best daughter, Silver Scorn, failed in tho Sydney Cup, two miles. Fersen is by Verbius from Gallantry, by Lemberg from Chivalry, by the Doncaster Cup winner Amadis. He is a brother to Oratory, who won tho V.R.O. St. Leger, but did nothing afterwards. Verbius is by Swynford from Hippolyte, by Veles, a son of Isinglass, and is in-bred to Isonomy, staying blood. Calient© has great pretensions to stamina.' ! Her sire, Polazel, is by Polymeius from Ardazel, by John o' i Gaunt, and won three times over two miles. Her dam, Fortune's Wheel, i 3 a sister to the great Phar Lap, than which there can bo no higher reeom- ■ mendation. Silver Sight is by Silverado from On Sight, by Winkie from Aye Ready, by All Red. The latter won the Auckland Cup twico, and Winkie was siro of a i first-class stayer, Pilliowinkie, and of the dam of Phar Lap. Tho same remarks apply to Silver Sight as to < Argentic. ]
Guarantee is by Paper Money from Entre Nous, by Boniform from Secret Link, by Bezonian. Secret Link was dam of the great sprinter Silver Link, and this reads like a sprinting pedigree. Osculate is by Rosenor from The Kiss, who is not in the Stud Book and apparently did not race. Rosenor is by Sceptre's son Grosvenor # from Rosey. by Ladns. He was a sprinter and has sired sprinters. Sunee's Stout Breoding Walton Park is by Cape Horn from Kilceit, by Kilboy from Conceit, by Boniform from Lady Wayward IL, by Ladas. Cape Horn is by He, who finished second in the Cesarewitch, and was a son of the great stayer Santoi, but there is a doubt about tho genuineness of tho descendants of Lady Wayward 11.
Kemal Pasha is by Gay Shield from La Penna, by King Itufua from Cintra, by Eton, which does not read liko a cup pedigree. Tuirau, who has good form, is by Silverado from Tunhine, by Lucullus from Persis, by Mar bio Arch from Latona, by Phoebus Apollo, tracing to Miss Kate, ancestress of Phar Lap. Phoebus Apollo sired the Melbourne Cup winner Apologue. Hero again much depends on Silverado. Vanestep is by Wcathervane from the great mare Wars tep, winner of the Now Zealand Cup. Wenthervano is by Lemberg from Vain Air, by Ayrshire, and has not sired stayers up to the present. Tout 1<? Monde is by Limond from Aspra, by Polvmelus from Jelly, by Isinglass. Ho has failed too often to be recommended.
Dodge is by Chief Ruler from Toiling Tessic, by Santoi from Fixing, by Willonyx. Santoi and Willonyx were two of the greatest stayers seen in lingland during the present century, the latter winning the Ascot Gold Cup and having the Cesarewitch weightcarrying record. Chief Ruler sired the Auckland Cup winners Admiral Drake and Gold Trail. Sunco is by Australian Sun from Bui'ee, by Kaplston from Bifida, by Wallace, and comes from a most successful Australian family. Australian Sun is by Sunstar from Rosewarno, by St. Frusquin, and sired Cireesun, winner of the Perth Cup, two miles, twice, Sun Song (Q.T.C. St. Loger). Regal Son (A.J.C. Metropolitan) and Parallana (Adelaide Cup). Ihere is any amount of stamina in this pedigree.
