SERIOUS ASSAULT
MAN'S SKULL BROKEN IMPRISONMENT IMPOSED Having been found guilty of assaulting his employer so as to cause him actual bodily harm, Charles Augustus Milich, was yesterday sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard labour by Mr. Justice Fair. Milich, who was employed on a dairy farm, struck his employer over the head with a shovel. Speaking on Milich's behalf, Mr. Webb recalled that the jury had made a strong recommendation to mercy on the ground that the assault was committed under provocation. His Honor said the assault was a serious one and might indeed have ended fatally. Milich struck a blow that broke a man's skull and seriously incapacitated him for some weeks. His Honor said he would take into account the jury's recommendation and the fact that Milich was actuated by sudden passion and was previously of good character. Still, an assault of that kind, which placed a person's life in peril, could not be met by probation. The least sentence he could impose would be three months' hard labour.
