NEWS FROM WHANGAREI

The Whangarei branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals held a "Hollywood Carnival'" dance in the Parochial Mall, Whnngarei. The hall was appropriately decorated, the walls being hung with flags and nikau palms, and this corners brightened with coloured lights, one ol: which was screened off as ' Rookery Nook." Poses of varying colours and clusters of balloons completed the scheme of decorations, which had a truly carnival effect. Those responsible for the decorations were Mesdames Patterson, O'Hara and Hamilton, and AJiss Davidson. A large Union Jack was hung at the back of the stage and the orchestra was enclosed in a shrubbery of miniature rimu trees and palms. The supper tables were in the charge of the ladies of the committee, each wearing a novel headdress with the Blue Cross pictured upon it. Miss Petty Patterson rendered a solo, which was followed by a tap dance. Mrs. J. P. O'Hara had donated all the prizes won during the evening. Included among the guests wore the Mayor and Mayoress, Mr. and Mrs. W. Jones.

Tho Whangarei Ladies' Gardening Club held its last indoor meeting of tho season in the Masonic Temple, Whangarei, the president, Mrs. J. H. Nieholls, presiding over a good attendance. The pot plants grown for competition were judged by Mrs. R. S. Finch and Mr. W. U. Timewell. The prize for a plant not grown under glass was awarded to Mrs. Lewis Going and tho prize for a plant grown under glass was won by W. W. Logan. The prizes for tho garden competition were awarded as follow: —Mrs. W. Thomson, 1; Mrs. T. Woodman, 2; Mrs. W. T. Simons, 3. Mrs. W. Given explained the system that had been adopted in awarding points, and gave interesting information gleaned from the competing gardens.
