OBITUARY

MR. E. G SKEATES

EX-MAYOR OF BIRKENHEAD The death of Mr. Ernest Gilbert Skeates, a former Mayor of Birkenhead, occurred in London on Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Skeates left Now Zealand for England in 1929. and had since resided at Strontium), London. 31 r. Skeates, who was 6'3, was born in liristol, and oatnc to Now Zealand with parents in the sailing ship JJoman Empire, arriving at Auckland in IS-2. Although a jeweller bv occupation. .Mr. Skeates senior first engaged in farming, residing in turn at hatawhata, Hamilton and New Plymouth, j About 1890, however, he brought his family to Auckland and opened a jeweller's shop in Queen Street which, on his subsequent retirement, was taken over by the late Mr. K. 0. Skeates and auother son. Mr. A. M. Skeates. In 1911 the partnership was dissolved but two wars later, alter a vimi to London, Mr. E. CI. Skeates again commenced business as a jeweller, lie carried on this !iu»ine<s until his retirement in 1929. when two of his sons, Mr. K. G. Skeates and Mr. W. 11. Skeates. assumed control of the ostabli>hment under the name ot Skeates Brothers. l-'or many years Mr. Skeates was a member of the Birkenhead Borough Council and for the four years prior to his departure lor England he was Mayor. Ho also served on the Waitemata Eleetrie-PowCr Board and was a member of the Auckland Savage Club. Mr. Skeates' first wife died in 1926 and he remarried in 1925. He is survived by his wife and his five children of the first marriage.

MR. J. A. COOK News has been received of the death of Mr. John Arthur Cook, of London and Sutton, England, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Cook, of Takapuna. Mr. Cook died of heart failure while climbing in the Austrian Tyrol. Mr. Cook was educated at Waitaki High School and 'Wellington College, and took his degree in electrical engineering at Finsbury College. London, being top man of his year. He served with the Gordon Highlanders throughout the Great War, retiring with the rank of captain. He paid a visit to NewZealand in 1920-21 and later became a partner in the firm of Raworth, Moss and Cook, chartered patent agents, Westminster, London. Ho is survived by his wife.

MRS. A. DAVIDSON [BT TF.I.FGHAITI OWN CORRESPONDENT] TAURANGA. Friday The death occurred at Te Puna this morning of Mrs. Adelaide Davidson, the widow of the late Mr. A. M. Davidson, who for many years was chairman of the Tauranga County Council, aged 82. Mrs. Davidson was born at Te Puna and had lived there all her life. She was a daughter of the late Mr. Louis Bidois, who was one of the earliest white settlers of To Puna district'. Mrs. Davidson is survived by her only daughter.
