WAR AGAINST BURMA After a long period in which relations between the countries had been strata, Britain was about to embark on the third Burmese war. 50 years ago. The New Zealand Hkkalu of October 1885. said: — "War with Burma is now apparently inevitable. We have no news that King Theebaw has replied to the British ultimatum. but whether be has or not, it is evident that the authorities regard a conflict as impending. Troops for service in Burma have received orders to leave England with the least delay and this step could hardlv have been taken except in the belief that ai chance of averting hostilities was at an end." .itg A brief campaign sufficed for the quest of what remained of the kingdom of Burma, which was annexed 0D January 1, ISB6.
