CHRISTMAS MAILS

DESPATCHES FOR OVERSEAS PROBABLE CLOSING TIMES Parcels, periodicals and newspapers to bo despatched to Great Britain and Europo for Christmas by direct mail must be posted within tho next month. Tho three last mails via Panama, of which tho Post and Telegraph Department has notification at present, are by the Akaroa. from Auckland, expected to close here on November 7, and due at London on December 11; by the Port Chalmers, from Auckland, closing here on November 13, and duo at London on December 17; and by the Rangitiki from Napier, closing at Auckland on November 17, and due at' London on December 22. It is possible that mail by tho last-named despatch may not reach all parts of Great Britain in time to bo delivered before Christmas.

Largo parcels must bo despatched by theso mails nt the latest, but packets up to 21b. in weight, can be sent at .tho same rates by a later mail via America. This mail, by which letters to reach England before Christmas must also bo sent, will he by tho Makura from Wellington, closing at Auckland on November 25 and arriving at London on December 24. This mail also will probably not be delivered in all parts of tho country before Christmas, but the two prior despatches via America will close in the middle of next month at about the same time as those by the direct vessels. They will be despatched from Auckland by the Aorangi and Lurlino, closing here on November 12 and 16 respectively, and due at London on December 11.

Copies of the Christmas Number of The Weekly News can be despatched by direct mail to Great Britain at Id or by the San Francisco or Vancouver routes at sd. The chief postmaster, Mr. J. P. P. Clouston, said yesterday that indications were that Christmas mails for overseas would be very heavy this year. Parcel mails especially should be larger, as it seemed likely more people would be sending presents to friends in other countries than during the past few year*.
