SUSTENANCE REFUSED
COMPLAINT AT TAKAPUNA STATEMENT BY OFFICIAL Protests against the alleged refusal of the Labour Department to pay sustenance allowances to Takapuna men who hare declined to go to the Kauri Point relief camp ■were contained in telegrams forwarded to tho Prime Minister, Mr. Forbes, by the Mayor of Takapuna, Mr. J. Guiniven, yesterday. Mr. Guiniven stated that he bad understood camp work was to be voluntary. Forty of the 100., Takapuna men on sustenance had been offered work at the Kauri Point camp, 12 miles from Takapuna. Only eight had accepted, it being considered that the distance to the camp and the travelling time involved would cause too much inconvenience. Some of these men had been refused sustenance. ,
"Camp work is voluntary," said an official of the Labour Department last night. " The only Takapuna men who have been refused sustenance payment are fovtr who have refused to undergo a medical examination required of all sustenance men by the Unemployment Board."
