AMATEUR ATHLETICS

AUCKLAND CENTRE SUCCESSFUL SEASON RECORDED There was a large attendance of delegates at the annual meeting of the Auckland centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. Mr. J. P. Kalaugher presided. The report and balance-sheet showed the past season to have been most successful. During the tummer season Auckland had annexed the honour of being champion province, winning both the championship shield and the Queensland Jubilee Memorial Shield. It was the first time that Auckland had won the former tropliy for 33. years. W. S. Bainbridge and F. A. Finlayson had created New Zealand records, the former in the 220 yards sprint and the latter in both the 220 yards hurdles and 440 yards "hurdles.

Visits were received from teams of Canadian schoolboys and British and athletes, their appearances at the Domain providing most spectacular meetings. The cross-country season had also resulted in a win for the Auckland team, this being the first occasion cn which Auckland hud won all the major athletic honours in one year. N. F. Cooper and J. W. Savidan won places in the New Zealand cross-country team that visited Australia There had been a severe loss financially on the year's working, but the future of the sport was bright. The following officers were elected: —President, Mr. 11. L. Towers; vice-presidents, Messrs. A Moon, R. McLeod, C. A. Porter: secretary, Mr. H. J. Wily; treasurer. Rev. F de Lisle; committee, Messrs. A. Warren, K. Pinson, L. H. Johnstone, H. D. Ball. J. P. Dolan; delegates to the Nbw Zealand Association, Messrs. W. F. Ingram. L. A. Tracy; handicapper, Mr. A. Moon; starter, Mr L. C. Williams; assistant-starter. Mr. C. F. Russell; auditor, Mr. G. Fleming. It was resolved to record tho thanks of tho centre to Mr. J. P.. Kalaugher for his valued services as president for the past five years. The Gisborne Amateur Athletic Club wrote asking whether Auckland had any objection to the Whak itane and Opotiki Clubs forming a sub centro under tho control of tho Ctisborne district. The matter was left to the executive , A letter was received from tho Technical Old Boys' Club bringing forward several matters. It was resolved that the executive committee be empowered to go into the matter of improving training facilities at tho Domain With a view to improving the standard of starting in Auckland it was resolved that the centre starter be empowered to supervise and instruct starters throughout the district. It was also resolved to ask the centre starter to arrange regular starting practice at tho Domain during tho season. Tho matter of arranging a regular schedule of meetings was discussed and it was resolved to seek the fuller co-operation of clubs. .. v . Mr. A. T. Dav-.es. a ietiring vice-president, made n strong appeal for an athletic club to bo formed at North Shore. On behalf of tlif centre Mr Towers accorded thanks to Mr. Davies for his helo in the past. Tho question of inviting a New South Wales team to tour tho province was discussed and the matter was left to the executive
