ESCAPE FROM PHILOMEL
SEARCH FOR NAVAL MAN WARRANT FOR ARREST No trace, has been reported of acting-Petty-Officer Oliver Burridge, who was in custody on H.M.S. Philomel and escaped on Monday afternoon by climbing through a port-hole and swimming ashore. Investigations are being made by the police, who have circulated a description of the man. He is 29 years of age and about sft. din. in height, of strong build, with fair complexion and hair. He was wearing a white shirt, blue trousers and white sandshoes when he made his bid for freedom. The man, who was being held on a charge of desertion, was under close arrest, and the Royal Marine who was on guard dived into the harbour after the fugitive, but was handicapped by his uniform and could not overtake him. A search was subsequently carried out by,a number of Royal Marines and. the police,'and a warrant has been issued for the man's arrest.
