NOTES ON THE RACING

BY ARCHER

MAZIR SCORES AGAIN

SPRINT EVENT TO ASTARTH VICTORY FOR TRAY BIT

As a result of his impressive win on the first day, Mazir was installed favourito for the Normanby Handicap and ho had no difficulty in repeating the performance. He was about the middle of the field until reaching the straight and when the pressure was applied near the end ho smothered the opposition. Mazir is a four-year-old half-urocher, by Whirlwind, to the Welcome Stakes winner Strotto and he is a good galloper, who should score in better -than hack company, J. H. Wallace had bad luck with him last season when he was troubled with sorqness, but he is now doing well. Light Comedy, also by Whirlwind, made a good Bhowine paying a fine price for second. Bantry ran another sound race, just failing near the end. Teddy Boy displayed somo improvement upon his previous running and Tidalia tired only in the last halffurlong. Jewelled Girdle and Nun Nicer did best of the others.

Defeat of Red Sun Tho improving Erination, who was not quite as well fancied as Red Sun, mado practically a one-horse race of the Manukau Hurdles, thus making hia tally three wins and a second in his last four starts. The only time ho appeared to bo in any difficulty at all was when ho jumped ono fence somewhat faultily. Otherwise bo gave a line display and there is no doubt that ho is very useful. Jirination is an upstanding chestnut gelding by Illumination from Erinagh, by Elysian—Crecy, by Hotchkiss —-Ci'escent, by Castor, and he is ono of tho most promising jumpers produced in Auckland for some time. The favourite Pod Sun got his tongue over the bit during the running aud was never dangerous, although ho battled on to get third. Prince Val and Dark Marble appeared likely placegetters until they fell at the second to last fence. Prince Val broke his back and was destroyed. . The Epsom Handicap provided one of tho finest finishes of the meeting, practically every horso in the held having a good winning chance with u *urlonc to go. Astarth finished best to just win from Star Artist, who went another good race. Astarth was a trills improved for her outing on the first day, when she demonstrated what she was close to form by finishing a good fourth after making her run on the outside. Jonathan again went welli autl may soon return to his best. Boughal, Puss Moth and Galileo all faded in the last half-furlong after having every chance.

Steeplechase Mishaps Outsider but one of the field of 20, Mungatoon brought off a great tmrprise in the King Edward Memorial Handicap, paying over two score. Beginning smartly he made most of the running with Enge amlwithstoofl all challenges in the straight to score very decisively. Mungatoon s victory was overdue, as he had not bcen succcssful since winning the Hernes Memorial Cup tat 1° kmVo Jvn March. The top-weight Kiltow>n wns also at a fine price for second Ho recorded a sound performance, but found the task of con-i-e&ng the winner nearly two stone frist too much. King Bey was gomg- on stronclv at the end. He did not have the best of luck in running and in the circumstances his effort was good. Spiral und Scotland wont . soun^./^ 9 and Baroscope also shaped creditably. Monanui was closer at at any other stage and Kelly displayed a little more dash than on the first day, being fairly well in the picture half-way down the straight. Only three of the six runners completed" the course in the Onehunga Steeplechase, Cardhu, Cromwell and Petrarch all coming to grief m the second round when they were all going well and looked like haying good chances. The first day's winner, Gascille, again gave a fine exhibition of fencing and he stayed just too well for Clarion Call, who finished very tired. Gascille was in command throughout and he was nicely handled by 11. -Kj. Thomson, who rested him on the hill the second time, with the result that the Gasbag gelding finished solidly. Clarion Call pulled hard early and did not jump quito as well as usual over the first five fences, his confidence having been slightly shaken by his fall on the first day. Capella Abbey was almost down at the fence near the mile post in the first round, but made a great recovery. However, he was never afterward dangerous. Musket Stakes Contest

The consistent Gallio was favourite for the Musket Stakes and duly won, although he did not have a great deal to spare at the finish. However, he had none the best of the running, having to begin from the extreme outside and having a couple of horses on the inside of him for most of the journev. Queen's Council displayed improvement and would probably have made it more difficult for the winner if she had not run about a little when the pressure was applied. She is a fine type of filly who should do much better before the season is over. Anion again shaped creditably, failing only'near the end. Gay Chief was running on fairly well on the outside at the finish. The favourite, Gay Defence, again finished fourth in the Hobson Handicap, this being the third successive occasion on which he has filled that position. Victory went to Tray Bit, who was always in the leading division and just stayed on too well for Royal Dance at the finish. Royal Dance again drew the extreme outside at the barrier and the effort he made early to secure a forward position left him wanting at the end, although he went on gamely. Flood Tide made a good showing for third, as he did not have the best of luck of running. He met with interference when racing on the rails noar the fivo furlongs, losing his position, and afterward having to make h;s run on the outside. Mungacre and Scotch Nation did best ol the othors. Gloucester displayed a lot of pace after drawing one from the outside. His turn should como soon. Sir Abb Beaten The favourite, Sir Abb, made a determined bid to win the Liverpool Handicap, but he was narrowly beaten by Sinking Fund, who was never further back than second and finished on strongly at the end. Sinking Fund recorded a f-olid performance, but Sir Abb was a shade unlucky, having to change his course in the last furiong. Royal Secret was responsible for a fine effort and Haut Monde was closer at the finish than at any other stage. Haut Monde failed to race up to expectations and he is proving a disappointment. Psychologist was prominent for seven furlongs and then retired.
