DANGEROUS CROSSINGS

PLAN FOR ELIMINATION

FIRST YEAR'S OPERATIONS MAIN HIGHWAYS ONLY [BY TELEGRAPH —SPECIAL REPORTER] WE ISLINGTON, Wednesday The likelihood that only level crossings on main highways will come within tho scope of the first year's operations in tho Government's plan to remove dangerous crossings was indicated by the Prime Minister, Mr. Forbes, in the House of Representatives to-day. As Minister of Railways, Mr. Forbes was replying to a question addressed to him by Mr. A. J. Stalhvorthy (Independent —Kden) regarding the necessity of removing dangerous crossings in tho Mount Albert and Mount Eden boroughs, where numerous accidents had occurred.

Mr. Forbes said crossings would bo dealt with in order of urgency. Those on roads other than main highways would not he dealt with under tho programme, and in respect of any of those crossings, local bodies should communicato with the Railways Board.' Discussing the reply, Mr. Stalhvorthy said it would cause grave concern to local authorities in Auckland. Apparently extremely dangerous crossings only a few yards away from a main highway would not come within thp scope of tho scheme. Tho crossings were in closely-populated areas, and continued to bo a grave danger to public safoty. Ho pressed for urgont consideration of the matter.
