PACIFIC AIR LINE

SURVEYS OF THE ROUTE ANOTHER EXPEDITION (Received September 10, 9.25 p.m.) HONOLULU, Sept. 9 The fourth airways expedition for surveying the Antipodes route left Honolulu to-day by the United States coastguard cutter Itasca for Jar vis, Baker and Howland islands. Seven Hawaiians were on board as replacements of the crews left on those islands four months ago to make daily weather reports. The expedition was under the direction of the aviation bureau of the United States Department of Commerce. It included Mr. J. Walter Doyle, Collector of Customs, Honolulu, Lieutenant C. W. Johnson, a veteran navy airman, who plotted the course of Mrs. Amelia (Earhart) Putnam's flight along the coast, Captain H. A. Meyer, who is to take charge of the technical equipment, Captain M. B. Durette, with four Army technical experts as assistants, Mr. William T. Miller, of the Department of Commerce, Hawaii, and Mr. L. Fullardleo, agent of the owner of Palmyra Island. Three thousand gallons of drinking water and canned supplies were carried. The studies of the expedition along the prospective air route will be continued for several months, according to Commander W. N. Derby. He said the Itasca would return to Honolulu in October, calling at Kingman's Reef to survey a large area suitable for seaplanes. This is the Itasca's third survey along the route. Dr. Dana Coman, in his yacht Kinkajou, has set up radio stations in three American camps. Dr. Coman will come to Honolulu in October. He expects Mr. Harold Gatty to join him on a tour of Fanning and other islands. Recently he ordered a large supply of petrol to be delivered at Fanning Island.
