THE SPRING MEETING

TO-MORROW'S OPENING FIELDS in chief events review of the prospects BY ARCHER With the exception of the chief event, the Marangai Handicap, which has drawn a field of only five, very satisfactory acceptances have been received for the opening of the Wanganui Jockey Club's Spring Meeting to-morroxv, and there should be some very interesting racing. It is probable that Royal Banquet will be a good favourite for the Marangai Handicap, as he is splendidly lit. The chestnut has been out of luck jn his latest races and at Marton last Saturday he lost a golden opportunity to win when lie stumbled and lost his rider just after the start of the Marton Handicap. However, his turn'is duo and he is likely to take a lot of beating. One of the most difficult for Royal Banquet to beat may be Rtiri, who will be suited by the small field. Ruri has been working freely and is handily placed with 8.4 The topweight, Spiral, las not raced for some time, and that may be against him, although' he has been going /,nicely and is stated to be more forward than he was at this time last year. It is quite on the cards that he will run well. Tres Sec and Wahine Nui aro on the minimum, but their form has not been very good, although the former was second to Cottesmore at Marton. There may be most support for Royal Banquet and Ruri. Three-year-olds are likol.v to play a prominent part in the Flying Handicap, | in which horses of that age engaged are ! Galilee, Haut Monde, Hororata and 11 j Duco. Galilee and Haut Monde were in the first flight of last season's two-year-olds and Hororata was also very speedy, to that their reappearance is awaited \ with interest. II Dure is also smart and ! he may be capable of showing a good ! deal of improvement this season. Of the older horses recent form has ; shown Gold Mission and Slippery to bo in good form, but it is doubtful whether they will be,able to account for the best of the three-year-olds. Curie may be all the better for his race at Marton last week, but Mothor Superior is a gross mare who may feel the lack of recent racing Refresher has been galloping well and should be capable of n creditable effort with his handy weight. However, the preference is for the three-year-olds. and there may be strong support for Galilee, Haut Monde and Hororata.

TEAM FROM HASTINGS SOME PROMISING HORSES ESSEX FOR DEBUTANTE STAKES [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT ] HASTINGS. Tuesday The large number of Hawke's Bay horses who: went on from Marton to compete at Wanganui, was added to to-uay when the following were despatched from Hastings:—Happy Landing, Begorrah. Thane. Blue Garter. Granvale. II Duce, Essex and Mahua. Happy Landing has improved in his track trials' during the past week, and looks like being a fair outside possibility in the maiden race on the first day, but the Wanganui Guineas may be a little too rich for Mr. J. S. McLeod's colt just vet. Begorrah is a Lord Quex —Tea Tattle thred-year-old. who shows promise, but he requires time. Thane has been galloping exceptionally well and in an ordinary hack sprint would be fancied, but the opposition in the Durie Hank Handicap appears to be more than ordinarily difficult. Granvale is in the same race and similar comment fits him. Another from Hastings tvho will make good later is the three-year-old filly Blue Garter, who may do better in the Trial Handicap on the second day. She has one race to her credit. Lasit season 11 Duce revealed galloping ability "and in recent trials he has shown even an improvement on that, but he may not be forward enough for the Flying Handicap. He will command great respect from this quarter on the second day when he contests the Trial Handicap. Essex is a two-year-old by Siegfried from Polly Peftchum, and is a member of Mr. J. S. Mcleod's team. This colt is held in high regard by his immediate connections, and certainly on what he has done at Greenmeadows he must be seriously considered in the Debutante Stakes on Saturday. Mahua. by Lord Quex from Moa Bird, is also being taken through for the same juvenile event. She is smart and will handle this turning track to advantaue, so that she also will have to be taken into consideration, particuas she is well forward, a further factor to be considered at this time of the season.

NOTES FROM EVERYWHERE TRACK AND STABLE GOSSIP The seven-year-old mare Limes, by Limond from Exactly, has been disposed of to the Curragh stud at Waikanae, and is to be mated with the imported English sire Leighon. The Curragh trainer J. T. Rogers has won every important three-year-old race in Ireland this year. Smokeless (winner of the Irish One Thousand) added the Irish t)aks to the list on July 24 The other winners have been Museum (Two Thousand and Derby), and African Lily (Baldoyle Deiby). Museum also won the Ebor Han dioap at York on August 28. The veteran Sydney trainer, 1. Foulshani, who has lately had considerable success with Barak and Kaylah, is never at a loss for an apt reply to a critic. Somebody remarked when looking over a youngster he had recently bought, ' 1 do not like his front legs much " ' Well," came the answer like a shot, . I liked his hind logs, but the auctioneer would not break the set, so w hen 1 bought him I had to take the whole four " Several Ellerslie jockeys will bo rid®g at tho Wanganui Jockey Club's Meeting this week. L. Dulieu is to ride Lsteeni, It. \V. AlcTavish will be on walilee and Gallio (second day), and ■H. Goldfinch will steer Slippory and All Spirit. With the appearance of the weights •or tho Avondale Cup interest in the ra ce has quickened, and the prospects Trn n " w "°' n ß keenly discussed. The ■k'lerslie horses Kiltowyn and Kelly are am °ng the early fancies, and the nianJ 1 ® r in which they are accomplishing w)eir work suggests that they will both ace prominently. Kelly is to be ridden y L. Dulieu, who rode him when be «°n at Avondale last autumn.
