LIBRARY SYSTEMS
SCHOOL AND COUNTRY POSSIBLE IMPROVEMENTS [BY TELEGRAPH—SPECIAL REPORTER] WELLINGTON, Tuesday Improvements in the school and country library systems of New Zealand may 'be a possible development arising from the overseas tours of Dr. G H Scholefield, Parliamentary Librarian, and Mr. N. T. Lambourne, Director of Education. The Education Department holds the view that the withdrawal of subsidies from school libraries has meant a marked deterioration in a service ot great educational importance. Ihe extension of country libraries appears to be a slightlv more difficult matter. It. has been stated that no town with a population under 10,000 can provide an adequate library service, but in England and the United States conniderable success has attended the establishment of central institutions tor purchasing, distributing and supervising library facilities over wide rural ar it S is suggested that districts in New Zealand should be organised on this basis, with the possible employment of travelling library vans. Ihe Education Department is particularly interested in country libraries, as it holds that adequate facilities for reading are a necessary adjunct to ordinary education.
