SHORTAGE OF LABOUR
FARM WORK HANDICAPPED DEMAND IN MANAWATU i ■ [BY TELEGRAPH—OWN CORRESPONDENT) PALMERSTON NORTH, Tuesday There is at present a pronounced shortage of labourers for farm work in the district round Palmerston North, and employment bureaux report that numerous applications are being made by farmers who require employees. This position, coinciding with the commencement of the dairying season, has inconvenienced many farmers, and in fact there is a shortage at present of efficient labour for every branch of rural activities. Wages, as" the result, are tending to improve, but are still rather lower than in the Waikato. Much the same position applies in regard to domestics for country service.
