TELEPHONE SERVICE
NEW DIRECTORY ISSUED IMPORTANT NUMBERS CHANGED The distribution has begun of a new issue of the Auckland telephone directory. A start was made on Monday and tho 28,750 copies, of a total weight of 15 tons, w;ill be delivered by about the middle of next week. A fact to be noted is that about. 400 numbers, including those of tho Police Department, the Auckland Hospital, the Harbour Board and the Railway Department, have been changed, together with thoso of several banks and many large business firms. The change of numbers has been made to facilitate tho work of the automatic exchange, making more switches available for the use 6f large firms, so that a considerably improved service will result. It is not generally known by those who complain about the absence of an index of numbers in the directory that by ringing tho information department tho name of the subscriber for any number can bo obtained—a much simpler matter oven than looking up the directory were an index provided It is considered that the extra expense of providing an additional 30 pages tor this purpose is not warranted. New directories are issued in March and September every year, and there has been a considerable increase in the number of subscribers since tho last issue in Auckland.
