VALUELESS CHEQUES
MAN SENT TO GAOL " ANOTHER CHANCE OF NO USE " " This man has a long list of offences committed since 1926, and it is no use giving him another chance," said Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday, when a labourer, James Mckenzie (Mr. Aekins); aged 37, was charged with obtaining £6 2s 4d from Arthur John Powdrill on August 17, and £l2 12s from Harry Leonard Marwick on August 30 by means of valueless cheques. Senior-Detective Hall stated that accused had prevailed upon shopkeepers to cash the cheques for him, and they did so after satisfying themselves as to the apparent genuineness of the cheques. " Accused has never had any incentive to go straight," said counsel, " but now he has a young lady and a man friend who is prepared to give him a job at 3os a week, and to put up £lO as restitution." Mr. Hunt: In other words, you want to make a bargain with justice. Counsel: No, Your Worship. ! put that forward in all seriousness. " It is no use giving accused another chance," remarked the magistrate, in imposing a sentence of six months on each charge, the terms to bo cumulative.
