PIAKO RIVER FLOODING
PROPOSED DREDGE CUT SCHEME UNDER DISCUSSION [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT^ MORTtINSVILLE. Monday It is claimed that a dredge cut of pbout three miles, estimated to cost not more than £10 ? 000, would straighten the Piake River between Tahuna and Patetonga to such an extent as to put an end to the periodical flooding of thousands of acres of grass and flax land. This is tho contention of Tahuna and Patetonga settlers, who took representatives of the P'a ko County Council and the Thames Valley Drainage Board by launch on a cruise of a dozen miles down the winding Piako River from the Maukoro flaxmill to the Patetonga landing. The party expressed wholehearted approval of the project for cutting across the half circle bend in the Piako River, between the junction of the Piako and Waitoa, and the Patetonga landing. As the river winds, this is at present a distance of ii miles, but the proposed cut would be only three miles in length, and would dispose of tho willow nuisance. It was decided to place the matter before the three bodies concerned, the Piako and Hauraki Plains County Councils, and tho Thames Valley Drainage Board. _____________
