LITHOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

DISPLAY IN AUCKLAND FIRST IN NEW ZEALAND Tho first exhibition of. lithographs ever held in New Zealand, a collection of 72 prints lent by the Senefelder Club, London, was opened in the Auckland Art yesterday afternoon. The exhibition will continue for a month. Most of the prints are in black and white though a number are in three or more colours. All are the work of members of tho Senefelder Club and are in tho main of high quality, several, particularly, being extremely well executed. The exhibition was opened by the deputy-mayor, Mr. II Martin, wlio was introduced by Mr. J. W. Yarnall, chairman of tho Library Committee of the City Council. Mr. Martin stressed the need of such interests as art and literature as a means of attaining a balanced life and expressed pleasure that so many peoplo wore present. Ho gave a short outline of tho invention of the art of lithography and referred to the work of tho Senefelder Club. A display of tho materials and apparatus required for making lithographs was on view and their use was explained by Mr. Arthur H. Humphreys. At the conclusion of tho Auckland exhibition the collection will be shown for periods of a month at the art galleries of Christchureh, Dunedin. Wanganui and Wellington.
