HALF-HOLIDAY QUESTION
CHANGE-OVER AT HIKURANGI TRADESPEOPLE NOT UNANIMOUS [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT! WHANGAREI, Friday A change-over from Thursday to Saturday half-holiday will be made by the majority of the business people in Hikurangi, commencing on September 7. This is the third decision made by the business people of Hikurangi in tho matter of half-day observance. Following the change-over from Thursday to Saturday by tho borough of Whangarei in June last, a meeting of the Hikurangi business people was held, when it was decided to fall into line with Whangarei. This decision was not unanimous, and before the change had been made a further meeting was held reversing the decision. The Hikurangi Town Board, -which for many years has favoured the Saturday half-day, could not do anything until January 1 next, when it was expected arbitrarily to fix Saturday as the half-day. Anticipating this course a majority of the business people at a recent meeting decided that from September 7, Saturday closing would be given a three months' trial. At" the expiry of that fcuno a further meeting will bo held to consider the results of tho experiment. Some of the business people are not falling in with the proposed trial and intend to continue to close on Thursday afternoon as at present.
