LADIES' HOCKEY
DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIPS AUCKLAND TEAM'S SUCCESS [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] GISBORNE, Friday The New Zealand ladies' hockey championships opened at Gisborne today in overcast weather, with a coUl wind blowing across the ground. The Auckland team showed good form to defeat Marlborough by 5 goals to 3. The winners performed well early, completely dominating the play to establish a two-goals lead. Both goals were scored by Miss G. Lowe. Marlborough, who had* been playing sluggishly with mishits spoiling their combination, then showed an improvement, and snappy passing ended in Miss M. Wareham goaling. Over practically the remainder of the first spell Auckland dominated the play, Miss Lowe adding a third goal and Mrs. Gawler scoring a fourth. Just before half-time Miss Mills scored, the interval arriving with the scores: Auckland, 4; Marlborough, 2. The second spell was very even, each team adding one goal. Miss Lowe scored for Auckland and then Miss Mills for Marlborough. Results: — r A Section. —Eastern Southland, 5, defeated Poverty Bay A, 0; Canterbury, 4, defeated Bush, 2; Auckland, 5, defeated Alarlborough, 3. B Section.—Ruahine, 6, defeated Wairarapa, 0; Ashburton, 5, boat Wellington, 2; South Otago, 7, defeated Poverty Bay B. 1. To-morrow's draw is:—A section: Bush v. Eastern; Poverty Bay A v. Canterbury: Southland v. Auckland; Marlborough, a bye. B section: Akitio v. Ruahine; Wairarapa v. Wellington; Ashburton v. Poverty Bay B.
