GOODWILL GESTURE
JAPANESE MISSION RETURN TRIP TO SYDNEY A CRUISER AVAILABLE ARRANGEMENT. NOT NECESSARY Orders were received in Auckland yesterday for H.M.S. Diomede to leave the naval base at Devonport this afternoon for Wellington, where the Cruiser was to arrive at 9.30 on Thursday morning. These instructions, however, were cancelled last night. When the proposed departure of H.M.S. Diomede was referred to the Minister of Defence, the Hon. J. G. Cobbe, in Wellington, yesterday, the Minister confirmed the fact that the cruiser was due there on Thursday morning, but said he could give no indication of the vessel's future movements for a day or so. It was learned elsewhere, however, that the members of the Japanese goodwill mission, at present in New Zealand, have to be back in Australia early next week. At the time the inquiry was made it was still uncertain whether they would be able to reach Sydney in time by the Wanganella, which will leave Wellington on Saturday. If other means of transport failed, it was believed that the Government as a gesture of goodwill would plaCe H.M.S. Diomede at the disposal of the mission for the trip to Sydney.
