BURGLARY AND FIRE
WHANGAREI ROBBERY STRONGROOM DOOR DAMAGED [BY TELEGRAPH OWN CORRESPONDF-NTI WHANGAREI, Monday The police have been pursuing inquiries to-day in connection with the burglary and fire at Mr. J. Maurer's jewellery shop in Cameron Street last night. The robbery has points of similarity with that at the Kumeu post office and the entering of Mr. Pascoe's shop in Auckland last week. The view is held that the presence of a mattress near the strongroom door was intended to muffle the sounds of an attempt to explode the door, but no trace of any explosive has been found. The mattress had no connection with the shop. Mr. Maurer was unable to open the strongroom door this morning, and all efforts since have been unsuccessful. It is thought that an effort to force the look has created the damage. A neighbouring shopkeeper had placed £l5O in the safe for custody over the week-end. The stolen goods include four pads of signet rings and one pad of wedding rings, a large number of fountain pens and a number of gold and silver pencils. No arrest has yet been made. INTRUDER IN A STORE THEFT OF MEN'S SHOES r [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] KAITAIA. Monday On Saturday evening James' Store at Herekino was entered and a quantity of goods, including a number of pairs of men's shoes, were stolen. No one was seen on the premises at the time, Mr. W. James and his family, who live at the back of the store, being away at Kaitaia. They arrived home late in the evening. Entry was made by forcing a latch on the front window and when leaving the intruders carefully closed the doors and windows, and the entry would not have been discovered so soon but for the fact that the window curtain was torn and boot marks were left on the window-sill.
