Gratien Candaco, the negro deputy for Guadeloupe and a former Under-Secretary for tho Colonies, warned M. Laval that Frances black subjects were solidly behind Abyssinia. A war would provido the strongest stimulus to solidarity of the coloured races, of whom Japan considers herself tho leader. M. Cnndnco states that M. Lavnl snicl: "I will do my utmost to avoid a conflict. No secret agreement oxists hetwoon Franco and Italy to allow Signor Mussolini a freo hand in Abyssinia." Guadeloupe is a French possession in the Lessor Antilles, on tho eastern side of the Caribbean Sea, and consists or two islands separated by a narrow channel. There nre five dependencies consisting of smaller islands and the total area of the whole is 688 square miles. Tho population in 1932 was 267,407. Auk. 18 Tho Zulu chief, Walter Kumalo, has offered, to raise a picked regiment of Zulus to fight on bohalf of Abyssinia if she is attacked. Aug. 19 The Bombay correspondent of the Daily Telegraph says that tho Abyssinian uncertainty is disturbing the markets, and one operator has unloaded £370,000 of Government bonds.
