VOITRE WINS ON METRO MISHAPS IN STEEPLECHASE LOG FENCES TO BE REMOVED (Received August 38, 5.5 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Aug. 16 The Nerrin Nerrin Handicap at Flernington yesterday was won by the New Zealand-bred gelding Metro, ridden by K. Voitre. It was an exciting finish, the winning margin being only a short head. The August Steeplechase, in which 15 started, was won by Harmonic from Pnctolus and Disney. It was a memorable event. Six horses fell or lost their riders, resulting in the committee of the Victoria Racing Club deciding that the existing log fences should be replaced with hedge obstacles. Sixteen Annas, winner of the Australian Hurdles, was brought down half a furlong after the start in the August Hurdles. The rider, L. J. Hynes, said that Ranclea divod right under Sixteen Annas' neck. The stewards held an inquiry into the fall and decided to severely reprimand D. Mcllae, rider of Ranclea, and S. Carroll, rider of Ramado, for crossing too quickly. Synagogue and Royal Hunting were unplaced in the Apprentices' Handicap, New haven and North Cape in the Three-year-old Handicap, Palatinate and Cape Fair in the High-weight Handicap, and Greenhorn in the Nerrin Nerrin Handicap. WAIPA CLUB'S AFFAIRS [from OUR OWN correspondent] TE AWAMUTU, Saturday The 20th annual meeting of the Waipa Racing Club was held last night. Mr. F. Quin, vice-president, presided. The profit and loss account showed a loss for the year of £137, as compared with a profit oi £372 the previous year No winter meeting was held. Non-re-curring expenses totalling over £2OO figured on the balance-sheet, including the cost of incorporating the club. Appreciation was expiessed of the work of Messrs. A. H. Storey, J. T. Young and M. H. Tims in the campaign to dispose of debentures, which had resulted in £SOOO being oversubscribed The guarantors had carried the responsibility for two decades, and reduced the liability from over £II,OOO to about £4OOO. A protest was made against the heavy penalty imposed -on country clubs by the Government's taxation. The election of officers resulted:— Patrons, Messrs. W. J. Broadfoot and D. Stewart Reid, M.P.'s; president. Mr. W. G. Park; vice-presidents, Messrs. F Quin, A. H. Storey and J H. Elliott; auditor, Mr. G. 0. Jourdain; committee, representing nondebenture holders, Messrs. A. S. Wallace, S. A. Empson, T G. Martin, A. Bond arid F. Quin. Other officers will be appointed by the committee. The secretary reported that since last year no progress had been made with the Racing Conference's suggestion a year ago that the Taumarunui Club should amalgamate with one of its nearest neighbours, Waipa or Stratford. He had written to the Taumarunui Club on the subject, but had had no reply. Last month the conference changed its former attitude, and approved permanent amalgamation, or the absorption of Taumarunui with Oliinomuri. Reference was also made by members to the conference's attitude a year ago in deciding to allot the only floating permit available then to Stratford or Waipa. It was given to Stratford, but when that club failed to use it the permit was given elsewhere, while Waipa was not consulted again.
