NOTES ON THE RACING

EASY WIN FOR CARDIIU WITUI BREAKS LEG IN FALL FREE AIR'S STEEPLECHASE [BY TELEGRAPH —FROM ARCHER] CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday Only three started in the Aylesbury Steeplechase, and the favourite Cardhu won very easily. Cardhu gave a great display of jumping, and when Witui fell at the sod wall along the back his task was made easy. It was Cardhu's second success at the meeting and he improved with each race. Night Parade did not fence well, having a couple of lives. Witui was going well until he fell, turning a complete somersault, and he might have given the winner a good race with a stand-up. W itui was remounted by a stable boy, bat he fell again at the second to last ience, where he broke a leg and was destroyed. Showing improvement upon his first day's running, Land Raid won the Longbeach Handicap at double figures. He became prominent soon after the straight was reached, and won narrowly after having a hard contest with Joyous, who ran another solid race. Land Raid is a solid-looking customer and should go on to further success. The favourite High Glee drew No. 21 at the barrier, and after being wide out most of the way was running on solidly in third position at the end. Superex made a good showing and he is an improver who may not be long in winning. Dollar Prince, Invoice, Tooley Street and New Note all made creditable showings, Tooley Street being a likely improver. Close Hurdles Finish There was a fine finish in the Sydenham Hurdles, Polvdora staying on best to win narrowly. It looked as if Revision would win when she led at the last fence, but Polydora wore her down in the last little bit. The winner might have had a larger winning margin if she had jumped the second to last fence better than she did. Revision and Rasouli both went sound races. Rasouli made a good effort after jumping the last fence, but he weakened near the end. Hounslow was never going like a winner, and Verden failed to stay, tiring badly at the finish. The each-way favourite Red Sun finished well to win the Styx Hurdles and gain his second victory at the meeting. It appeared as if Giggleswick would win when he landed over the last fence in front, but Red Sun outstayed him in the run home and was going away at the end. Red Sun is gaining confidence in his fencing and he is a solid stayer who should win in better company. Giggleswick jumped with moiv confidence than in his previous outings and made an improved showing, failing only near the end. The racing should be beneficial to him and his turn may come soon. Sunward was responsible for a very creditable performance, and so was Manawatu. Jhe others were well beaten, Trishna and Joppa being a long way back at the finish. Going Suits Arctic King Showing improvement upon his second dav's running Arctic King won the Heathcote Handicap very impressively. He was not too well placed in the early stages, but ran up handy at the turn and was always a winner in the last half-furlong, where his rider rode him very confidently. He has won six times in his last eight starts. This was his first success in open company, and he should be a fine handicap performer this season. The easy state of the going was right to his liking. Osculate was responsible for a solid performance, and Kemal Pasha also did ' well, paying a nice price for a place. Korero, Lapel and Gay Crest were right up behind the placed horses, and all r performed creditably, Korero being | closer at the finish than at any other | stage. . The judge hoisted Silver Sight s mimher as the winner and altered it several moments later, although not before there had been a demonstration by a section of the crowd. Only five started in the Lincoln Steeplechase, and Free Air was responsible for a mild surprise in winning narrowly from Umtali, who finished very resolutely. Free Air fenced evenly throughout and she went on very solidly at the end, although she pulled up lame Umtali ran another fine race, and he may have won only for hitting a couple of fences hard. Billy Boy had every chance, and failed to go on in , the straight. The favourite Punchestown fell at the first fence, and Pahu baulked at the Kennels Double. Mount Val's Strong Run

j It was with a good finishing effort ; on the outside that Mount Val won the j Redcliffs Handicap, for which Rebel Lad and Kurapae were better supported. At the half-distance it looked as if Mount Val might not overhaul Star Raider, but be stuck to his task in the most resolute fashion to win narrowly. The easy going was to the liking of the winner, who is very useful. Star Raider ran a fine race, and so did Rebel Lad, although the latter weakened near the end after reaching the front about haif-a-mile from home. Horn's Reef and Friday Night performed creditably, arid the latter seems to be making slight improvement. Kurapae was prominent for about three furlongs, and then commenced to drift. In spite of his victory on the first day Fair Weather was at doublefigures in the Sclwyn Handicap. He was very patiently handled by H. Goldfinch, and finished very resolutely when the pressure was applied. Fair Weather gave F. Christmas his fourth training success at the meeting. Haere Tonu was responsible for a sound performance. Travenna again raced well. He looked like winning when he assumed command at the false rail, but, he weakened near the end. Kemal Pasha came home very fast on the outside, and would have been placed in another couple of strides Sea Fox appeared to be a possibility at the turn, but failed to run on. while Cranford stopped quicklv when the straight was reached. Knockfin was slow to begin and failed to go on at the end, after being prominent at the turn. j

KUINI RETURNING HOME INELIGIBLE AT ADDINGTON The trotting mare Kuini, who in June went Smith with Canton to .T S. Shaw'e stable, will return to Takanini this week. After runnine second to Te Kahu in the Stewards' Handicap at the Auckland winter meeting off 3.39, K u : ni was handicapped on 3.38. which mad*> her eligible for races at Aldington, but after being nominated, sh<- was reassessed at 3.39, and was unable to start at the meeting. The owner, Mr. W. Hosking. would be recompensed for the expense of Kuini's fruitless trip bv the'success at Addington of her stable-mate, Canton, who wa« responsible for a splendid effort iri win nine the Improvers' Handicap in 4.33 4-o off a 4.49 mark. With two races at Epsom to suit her, Kuini will havV prospects of showing an early return, although she will find Great Admiral a very troublesome opponent.
