SHORTAGE OF FARM LABOUR

Sir. —The farm hand should he pleased with the tacit admission of the Arai Riding Ratepayers' Association that his labour is 33 1-3 per cent underpaid, and still more pleased with the suggestion that single men's camps should be closed and their costs diverted to a fund to subsidise his present wages. It is an admirable idea. However, may I ask the Arai Riding Ratepayers' Association what steps will be' taken, the single men's camps being closed, to ensure that present rates, plus the full amount of the subsidy, will go into the farm hand's pocket? R. C. Grant
