TOHEROA MORTALITY

Sir, —I was interested to read in Monday's Herald Mr. Powell's theory in explaining the mortality of toheroas. I have understood that the cause was not through direct starvation, but because in certain, weather or tides schnapper came over the toheroa beds and f«d on the suckers protruding from the shells, and in this way prevented the unfortunate shellfish from feeding. 1 have been told that the fish can be seen standing on their noses burrowing for, or hanging on to, the toheroa's suckers. It would be interesting to know if the dead shellfish show any sign of mutilation. Inquirer.
