SOUTH AFRICAN TEAM FOURTH TEST MATCH TO-DAY NORTHUMBERLAND BEATEN By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright LONDON, July 25 A. H. Bakewell (Northants) replaces A. Mitchell (Yorkshire) in the English team for -the fourth cricket test match against South Africa, to be begun at Manchester on Saturday. Mitchell is not well enough to play. The South Africans to-day defeated Northumberland by eight wickets. The county made 198 and 222 (Lee 64). Langton took four wickets for 44. The visitors scored 323 in the first innings. Wilson took five wickets for 103. In the second innings the visitors made 102 for two wickets. The English cricket team's chances of winning the test series against South Africa will hinge on its performance in the fourth match, to be commenced at Old Trafford, Manchester, to-day. Viewed from England's angle the present match is of vital importance, as South Africa holds an advantage by reason of the victory gained in the second test. With only two matches to be played in order to complete the series, England will bo fully extended in upholding its prestige on the cricket field. It is evident that the time limit will be a major consideration in the fourth test match. South Africa, should it- find itsejf with its back to the wall,' can afford to "kill" time, as it did in the last test. Providing that conditions are anything like good, three days offer little scope for a decision, although South Africa managed to overcome this handicap in the second test. As the rules prescribe that the final game shall be played to a finish only if the rubber is in the balance it will bo appreciated how earnest England will be in its efforts to eliminate its deficit in the game at Manchester. The English team for to-day's match will be chosen from the following:Wyatt, Clay, Robins, Hammond, Leyland, Verity, Barber, Bakewell, Bowes, Tate, Duckworth, D. Smith and Hardstaff.
The English and South African averages in the three test matches played to date (one of which South Africa won, the other two being drawn), are as follows:—■
