WHEELBARROW DERBY

MANGERE TO AUCKLAND FIRST PRIZE TO L BROWN Since the "wheelbarrow Derby" craze | first came into prominence in Australia a few weeks ago its spread has known no bounds. Aucklanders had an opportunity of seeing a race of this kind yesterday, when barrows were trundled i from Mangere Domain to the Plaza Theatre, Queen Street. The distance was ! approximately nine miles. The race was not without incident, and was watched by hundreds of people along the route. Thirteen competitors, with barrows of all descriptions, lined up at the start. The field consisted of H. Ford, C. A. Buckley, J. F. Heavey (Eden Terrace), J. B. Gibbs (Mount Eden), W. McCormack (Sandringham), S. R. Brown. A. T. Barton (Ponsonbv), L. Brown (Pnrnelli, S. C. Dufty (City), A. J. Savers, P. Hutt, J. May (Royal Oak), J. Smith (Mount Roskill)/ The age of one co:tnl>etitor was 65 years, The race began at 9.15. An hour later the leading competitor, L- Brown, the League football player, reached Newmarket, a distance of six miles. A compulsory stop was made at Newmarket, the field being despatched again at 1.40. The last lap, which was completed at approximately two o'clock, developed into a tussle between L. Brown and S. R. Brown, the former winning. The majority of the competitor finished. The results were:—L. Brown. 1; S. R. Brown, 2; A. J. Savers, 3; W. McCorruack, 4. The first prize was £8 Bs, the second £2 2s and the third £1 Is. A special prize of £1 Is for the test representation of Ralph Lynn and Tom Walls was won by A. T~ Barton.

Later in the afternoon Barton wheeled C. Campbell to the top of College Hill to win" a private wager of £l. The prir.es in the event were presented to the winners at the Plaza Theatre last night by Mr. J. P. Moodabe, managing * director of Amalgamated Theatres. Limited, Some amusement was caused among the audience as each prize-winner appeared on the stage pushing a -wheelbarrow containing his fellow competitor.
