MOUNT NGONGOTAHA

BUSH ON THE SLOPES EFFORT AT PRESERVATION [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] ROTORUA, Sunday The question of the preservation of a considerable area of privately-owned bush on the slopes of Mount Ngongtttaha has lately been occupying the attention of local bodies in this district. A letter from the commissioner of Crown lands for South Auckland, received by the Rotorua Borough Council at its last meeting, indicates that unless £3OO can be raised to purchase the block, an area of approximately 200 acres will be cut. The commissioner suggested that the Rotorua Borough and County Councils should each provide £IOO as a contribution toward the purchase of the block. The purchase price was £3OO, but it was hoped that the remaining £IOO would be contributed by the Bruce trustees. The council decided that although it was anxious that the bush be preserved, it had not the funds immediately available to adopt the commissioner's suggestion. It was resolved to inspect the block and to ascertain whether it would 1«3 possible to spread the council's suggested contribution over a period of years.
