BETTING SWINDLE
FARMER'S LOSS OF £4OO SALESMAN SENT TO PRISON v•' A salesman, Alexander Wallace Copley, aged 37, who was recently responsible for defrauding a Mercer farmer of £4OO by means of to bogus betting transaction, appeared before Mr. Justice Fair for sentence in the Supreme Court yesterday. Prisoner, who was not , represented by counsel, asked His Honor to temper justice with mercy, r "You have a bad record," said His Honor. "During the past 15 years you have been convicted 11. times. During • the whole of that time apparently you have been living a shiftless and idle life. This particular offence was de- ■ liberately planned and you were the principal,actor in carrying it out. You obtained £4OO by a false pretence. If t. vou attempt to carry out crimes of •this kind you must be content to suffer the aporopriate punishment." His /Honor imposed a sentence of two vears' imprisonment, with hard t. labour. .
