AUSTRALIAN POLITICS

SIGNIFICANT STATE POLL SUCCESS Of MR. STEVENS The significance of the recent general election in New South Wales, which resulted in the return of the Stevens ■ Government with a largo majority, was stressed yesterday by Mr. H. W. Horsfield, general secretary of the United Australia Party in the State, who is passing through Auckland by the Niagara on his way to Honolulu and California. "New South Wales is the largest and •wealthiest Stato in the Commonwealth," Mr. Horsfield said, "and the return of the Stevens Government is a definite guarantee of the continuance of stable government throughout Australia. Never before in the political history of Australia has a Government been returned, after a difficult period, with a majority as large as that which supports Mr. Stevens." Sane government in New South Wales has been reflected by a rapid increase in prosperity throughout the State, Mr. Horsfield added. Unemployment registrations were only about a third of what they were three years ago.
