PUBLIC UTILITIES

NEEDS OF MANUBEWA CONTINUOUS TELEPHONE POLICE STATION IN DISTRICT The urgent need of additional public service facilities at Manurewa, particularlv in regard to the telephone service, was discussed at the Manurewa Town Board meeting last night, when representations were made by local residents. Dr. C. Campbell Jenkins said every suburban area, except Manurewa, had a continuous telephone service. There was no exchange service between midnight and 6 a.m., and a partial service on Sundays and holidays. Dr. Jenkins said his was the only line on night connection. Several serious accidents had occurred on the main road near Manurewa and it had been impossible to get into communication with a doctor or the police without considerable trouble and serious loss of time. Inconvenience and annoyance was also caused to residents generally, this being frequently experienced when the city hospital officials endeavoured to reach relatives of patients in urgent cases. The deputation also urged the board to insist that the police department establish an office and station a constable at Manurewa. Information regarding the status of a telephone exchange to qualify for a continuous service was submitted to the meeting. It was stated that Manurewa was 23 subscribers short of the j required number. It was mentioned that j a continuous service could be obtained j on a petition being signed by 75 per : cent of the present subscribers. This 1 would involve a slight increase in tho annual charges. The board decided to prepare and issue to subscribers a questionnaire on the proposal to secure a full service. j In regard to the establishment of a : police station in the district, Mr. W. ' T. Cox said the board had made a re- ! quest for an interview with the Minis- ' ter of Justice to discuss this matter on his next visit to Auckland. No reply ' had been received.
