SWIMMING CHAMPION

AMERICAN GIRL'S SUCCESSES A 17-year-old Miami girl, Miss Katherine Rawls, proved herself the ' best all-round swimmer of her sex in the world by her successes in the United States ladies' championships decided recently at Chicago. Miss Rawls won the 100 yds free-style in 635, the 300 yds medley in 4m 9 3-ss, breaking her world's record for this event, the lOOvds brcaststroke in lm 20 3-os, and finished third in the 220 yds free-style. This title was won in 2m 35is by Miss Lenore Kight. who also retained the 500 yds in 6m 21 9-10s. A new rule restricted competitors to four events, so Miss Rawls did not defend her springboard diving championship. A new world's record for 100 yds haekstroke was again established by Mrs. Eleanor Holm Jarrett, her time being lm 9 3-sa. The skill of American sprinters was exemplified in the 400vds free-style relay. This was won by the Washington Athletic Club's quartette in 4m 15 3-] os, with tho Carnegie Club a close second in 4m 17s, both teams eclipsing the United States record of 1m 19 3-ss.
