BOWLING

AUCKLAND CENTRE'S YEAR

INCREASE IN MEMBERSHIP The report to be presented at the annual meeting of the Auckland Bowling Centre to-morrow week states that the season just ended has again been a particularly busy one, for, in addition to the full round of competitions, the centre had the pleasure of receiving a visit from representatives of the North Auckland Bowling Centre, and from the councillors of the association. Visits were made to the South Auckland Centre and to several distant clubs of the Auckland Centre. The fact that the New Zealand championship tournament was held in Auckland also tended to make the season a very full one.

It is pleasing to report a fairly sub- i Btantial increase in membership, the sea- i son closing with a total of 46 clubs, repre- j senting an aggregate membership of 2799, ■ as compared with 45 clubs and 2GSS mem- i bers for the previous season, an increase of one club and 114 members. This increase has been largely brought about by the affiliation of the Auckland Transport Bowling Club with a membership of 56. The v;inners of the centre's principal competitions were:—Easter fours, Carbines, Oates, Jury, L. Jury (Ponsonby); clubs' executive fours, Walker, Shaw, Caddy, E. E. Buckley (Grey Lynn); juniors fours. Cox. Mcintosh, Gadd, C. H. Prince (Grey Lynn); first year players' fours. Watts, Elmbranch, McMillan, Blakemore (Edendale); Christmas fours, McDougall, Furnell, Wilson, J. H. Mingins .(Epsom); champion pairs, McMurchy, E. E. Buckley (Grey Lynn); champion of champions, W. H. Keatley. The popularity of the pennant competitions among the clubs of the centre was again well maintained, as entries were received from 34 clubs, representing 348 teams or 1392 players taking part in each round, a very gratifying increase of 192 players over last season's figures. As usual it was played in two sections, and again favourable weather allowed of section play being completed* before the Christmas holidays. Very keen interest was maintained throughout the competition. Section A was won by Carlton Club with 30 teams and section B by Howick Club with two teams, the final which took place on a neutral green resulted in a win for the former club. In the middle of February, eight teams from the centre journeyed to Te Aroha in order to take part in the annual contest with teams from the South Auckland Centre. The Auckland representatives found the opposition too strong, the match resulting in a win for South Auckland with 8J wins and 892 points, while Auckland scored 7i wins and 345 points. The annual tournament of the New Zealand Bowling Association took place in Auckland during January The tournament was played in glorious weather, and all things combined to make it what it was generally stated to be—a splendid success. Players from the centre figured prominently in each of the competitions, and the final of the rinks championship was fought out between two teams from the Auckland Centre. The executive desires to extend special congratulations to Mincham, Donaldson, Liver6idge and Whittle, of the Grey Lynn Club, who have brought honour to the centre by carrying off the »rinks championship. Congratulations are also due to Stephens. Macklow, Robertson and Livingstone ,of the Onehunga Club, who acted as runners-up in the same competition. Congratulations are certainly due to the Grey Lynn Club for the outstanding success achieved by its members during the season just ended. Besides providing the New Zealand champion rink, it was more than ordinarily successful in centre competitions, having carried off the honours in the champion pairs, executive fours, and junior fours competitions. Regret is expressed at the loss suffered in the deaths of Messrs. J. S. Kilgour and James Carlaw, both of whom were active workers in the interests of the game. The statement of accounts shows a balance of assets over liabilities of £506 15s 9d. ONEHUNCA CLUB The following skips have entered teams for the Onehunga Bowling Club's full-rink tournament to be held to-morrow, commencing at 9 o'clock:—Parsons (Ponsonby), de Launay. Emeralli, Hosking (Carlton), Frnser-Smith (West End). Maude (Edendale), Wood (Ellerslie), Donaldson (Grey Lynn). Bray (Remuera). Burton (Epßom), Sampson (Mangere), McKeggio (Mount Albert). White (St. Heliers), Livingstone, Robertson, McKenzie (Onehunga).
