THE CITY MARKETS
GLUT OF PUMPKINS CAULIFLOWERS PLENTIFUL LEMONS SLOW OF SALE A very poor demand existed for lemons at the City Markets yesterday. Hothouse grapes met with an improved demand and prices were correspondingly high. Tree tomatoes and New Zealand grapefruit sold fairly but oranges and pears wore hard to quit. In the vegetable section there was a glut of pumpkins and citron melons, pumpkins being obtainable at as low as 2s per cwt. Very heavy supplies of kumaras came forward and sold at lower prices than those ruling last week. In spite of heavy supplies cabbages remained at last week's level. Heavy supplies of cauliflowers were also on sale and met with a keen demand. It is expected that cauliflower supplies will be even heavier within the next few days, owing to the milder weather. Carrots and beet sold cheaply. There was a medium supply of poultry, the demand for table birds being keen and that for laying varieties poor. Prices were unchanged. Values were:
