FARMERS' UNION
WORK TO BE OUTLINED r A remit xirging that immediate steps be taken to issue in pamphlet form a brief outline of what the New Zealand Farmers' Union had done to protect and improve the lot of the farming community, was received at a meeting of the Auckland provincial executive yesterday from the Kaipara sub-pro-vincial district. It was stated that the ordinary farmer was grossly ignorant as to the constructive operations of the union. The proposal was supported by members, who said such a pamphlet would be of great value to, branch officers in collecting subscriptions and seeking new members, and the remit was adopted. A letter was forwarded by Mr. H. M. Rushworth, M.P., from Mr. G. H. Mackley, general manager of railways, regarding damage by flood waters to portion of a fence between a farmer's property and the railway line. The letter stated that arrangements had been made for a section of the fence in question to be re-erected on higher ground by the department. Mr. ItushTyorth stated that an admission was made of liability on the part of the department and it could be made use of in other cases.
A resolution from a country branch was received urging that farmers in the country who lived long distances from the railway, be granted free toll calls when telephoning the railway station regarding the ordering of trucks or consigned goods. The matter was deferred until other questions regarding telephones are being dealt with.
